Blackberry Tutorial: Resize buttons on home screen (video)

[Posted 04/09/2010 at 12:01 AM | 10 Comments]

Time and time again I am asked how to resize the icons that are displayed on the home screen on your Blackberry theme. So, in this video tutorial I will show you how to accomplish this two ways. One way is to make your 3rd party apps smaller and another way is to keep your OEM icons on the home screen and make them small. A theme that I created used the second style of resized icons.

Why do it?

Some devices only give you room for 6 icons. However, with this trick/tip you will be able to add as many as you want. However, if you add to many then they will become small and extremely unreadable. Take the time to watch this video to see how I turn 80×80 icons into 60×60. You can do this for any device but in this tutorial I am working with the Bold 9700, Tour, and Curve 8900.

Please Note

You have to download the Blackberry Theme Builder tools onto your computer.
This tutorial will be using Composer and Theme Builder.

I wanted to ask you why you used Photoshop to resize the 1st image, but resized the calendar & message on the Composer program??

    Thanks in advance.

I spoke to you on BBM, but for anyone else who is wondering the same… You CAN do it in composer, but this saves a lot of time in doing so. However, you can resize the regular icons in composer, like messages, mms, sms, etc…not the 3rd party stuff.  (quote this comment)

    Hi Matt,

Is a great tutorial, the icons are resized a the new notification message work fine on the resiszed icons.

But I have a doubt, the tutorial resize the icons on blackberry use device order. This work with individual Blackberry application icons too? The must important part of my question is if you resize individual application icons like: messages, calendar and phone calls log they still continue working perfectly the new notifications icons on each one?

    Thank you!  (quote this comment)

    This was SO much help.
But I had one problem. I’m using the Pearl 9100 and wanted to make my icons verticle to the left with 5 icons and managed to do so with the help of your tutorial here. But on my homescreen the first (top) icon and the last (bottom) icon are repeated appications. For example; my top icon is messages and my bottom one is messages too. I’ve tried re-ordering them and I just can’t get 5 different ones to show up.

Any thoughts on how I could fix it?  (quote this comment)
