Blackberry Tutorials: Sliding Dock (video)

[Posted 05/07/2010 at 12:01 AM | 14 Comments]

A sliding dock is a great thing to have on your Blackberry. It will give you the ability to have a lot of icons on your phone without taking up a lot of space. You can have as any icons as you would like on the scrolling dock. Therefore, in this video tutorial I will explain how to make one. Feel free to ask as many questions as you need.

Why do it?

As stated above, this is great if you like to display your wallpaper but want to have a lot of icons on your home screen. Please take a look at my DroidSlide theme to get an example of this.

Download Files

I have enclosed a few downloads that you can use. The first two include every file I used to create the Sliding Dock . The last link is to download the CODE only.

Download ZIP
Download RAR
Download Code Only (.txt)

Please Note

You have to download the Blackberry Theme Builder tools onto your computer.
This tutorial will be using Composer and Theme Builder.

    Hi Matt!

Thank you so much for these tutorials. I’ve learned a lot from them and it’s actually pretty fun creating themes. I was wondering if you ever used the default focus icon along with the sliding dock? When I did that, the dock seems to lag a bit when it slides. I’m not sure if the image needs to be compressed or not, but the slight lag bothers me a bit. Any ideas? Do you think changing the dur=”0.5s” would make it smoother?

Thanks again and keep up the excellent work!  (quote this comment)

Can You Help Me get the simulator to work on windows 7 64bit. i installed them and if i go into programs and under rim it shows it and allows me to open it however it doesn’t recognize it in theme builder. is it a simple fix or does it have to be moved to a certain folder?  (quote this comment)

Hey man, first of all; excellent skills, tutorial and website. Truly… no suck-up intented ;)

One question; it wasn’t so hard to find out how you did the scrolling, keep things in the middle thing, but it offers me with one problem. I have implemented it into a “standard” Zen theme, but when I go from my profile button down to my buttons it triggers the in focus event and the thing starts scrolling. Any way to prevent this? I really hate to use the L model to prevent it, especially when you have 16 buttons ;)

    Thanks man!  (quote this comment)
