To put it simply a captcha works by generating a random string, writing it to an image, then storing the string inside of a session or cookie or by some other method. These are great when you want to have some extra security in your forms. They also help from all of the spam emails you get from your website forms.

Instead of typing out the entire script, take a look at this great premade script. It was made by Jonathan Feaster and he posted it on his website. He named it Jcap. You can view the website here. Everything is premade and all you need to do is drag the files into your server. Do a few tweaks with the HTML and your good to go.
