A lot of us started somewhere when we first learned about web design. With that being said, most of us can spot a poorly designed website, but do we know how to prevent it? Below is a short list of do’s and don’ts when it comes to web design.
The Don’ts
- Have you ever used those lovely scrolling marguees? Not only are they annoying, but they serve absolutly no purpose. Unless you have a website that involved stocked to be in ticker format, please cut it out!I am sure we have all used this lovely thing once and awhile. Annoying, right?
- Have you ever been in a situation, maybe on MySpace, when you are trying to read something but because of the background image, some of the words gets cut off and it is hard to read unless you scroll? Yes, well, that is really annoying. So please stop!
- Have you ever underlined words that weren’t links? You are searching a website and all of a suddern you see an underlined word. Well, if the proper word is underlined you may try to click it. Then, you start to wonder why your not able to click on the link because you can clearly see that it is underlined. There is no reason to underline words. If you want words to stand out, make them bold.
- Just think, you are at a website that consists of hundreds of images. It will end up get confused, let alone your eyes and mind will start to wonder because you want to look at everything on the website. Please stop filling your site up with a lot of images. It makes for a much more confusing visit.
- Using very small font is not a good thing. Small font does look good but it can strain the eye. Please refer to the What is Graphic Design post and take a look at the page layout. The left side looks better because it fills the paper and your eyes is not filled with the negative space.
The Dos
- Be consistent when you were using links. It will make your web site flow and look a lot better.
- Using bullet points or numbers (like you see here and around my entire website) will give your viewer a quicker chance to read the main points of your site. It will draw their eye towards it.
- A simple, classic, easy to follow layout. Do not be worried about showing off your skills on the layout. Let the viewer click around your page, as they navigate, they will get an idea of what type of person/company/designer you are. The best thing to remember is to always keep it simple.
- Forms. They are the best way for the person using your site to contact you. However, again, keep them simple.
- Use short paragraphs. I can not tell you how many times I visit a website and see all the text and then click way. Unless you are hosting a news site, keep your posts/comments/pages to a minimum.
These simple rules will make your next website more invited and better looks. Please dont be scared to contact me.
