Since I have a lot of Blackberry themes for sale I thought I would write up a quick tutorial on how to upgrade the operating system on your Blackberry handheld device. This tutorial will work for all Blackberry phones, and it is extremely easy to do. You will have to download a few things to your computer/laptop, but once you do, upgrading your Blackberry is super easy. A lot of the times when someone purchases a theme from me, the theme does not work. More times than not, it is due to the operating system and theme compatibility. This will also play into effect when downloading a new app for your device. That is why an upgrade is needed! Upgrades are also needed for other reasons, but if you do not research those, you will never know. If you wish to know what those are, write a comment below and I will answer you! :)

Before we begin, I must say this:

I am in no way responsible for the data on your phone and/or computer. The following tutorial is something I put together due to the amount of theme I sell per day. If done properly, your blackberry will upgrade to the new OS, is not done properly, well, I honestly do not know what will happen since I was never faced with that situation. Again, use the following tutorial as your own risk!

Another note: Make sure the apps and/or themes you are using right now are compatible with a newer OS. More than likely the themes will not work whereas the apps will. But again, upgrade at your own risk.

The first thing you want to do is to make sure you install the Blackberry Desktop Manager (are you a MAC user?). When you get to the website, click on the drop down list and select the desktop manager you want to download. Rememeber, it goes along with your phone. If you have a Pearl (not the Pearl Flip) or Curve 83xx, you want to download the 4.5 or the 4.6 version. If you have any other phone (Storm, Tour, Curve 85xx, Curve 8900, etc), you want to download the 4.7 version. Also remember, most of the newer Blackberries (for example the Storm) asks you to upgrade on your phone if you have the data plan. After you install and restart your computer, plug the Data Cable into the PC and the phone. Start the desktop manager and your blackberry will auto connect. Backup your files prior to upgrading your OS!!

Now, you want to download and install the operating system. Below are the links.
Make sure you download an operating system prior to starting the upgrade process.

Next, you want to download and install CrackMem (read more information). If you are using Windows Vista or Windows Seven, make sure Crackmem has admin right by right clicking it and select ‘run as admin’.

NOTE FOR BLACKBERRY PEARL 8100 USERS:

Delete ColorPearl from your BB, it does not work on 4.5.
Download and install BlingBall to your PC.
When you upgrade, make sure to select the application.

The time has come to upgrade. I can not say this enough – BACKUP BACKUP BACKUP!
DO NOT FORGET TO BACKUP THE SD CARD IF YOU ARE USING ONE!!

crackmem

1) Open up Crackmem.
2) Press the circle next to the operating system you downloaded (see links below).
3) Press ‘ Confirm Operating System Selection’.
4) Select the check box next to ‘Remove Vendor.xml’.
5) Press ‘Execute Selections’.
6) Press ‘OK’ when the action complete box pops up.
7) Plug your Blackberry into the data cable that is connected to your PC.
and finally, In Crackmem > Press the Desktop Manager button.

Once Desktop Manager opens up, it will ask your what files you want to install onto your Blackberry, make sure the new OS is selected. Let Desktop Manager do it’s thing, and once your phone restarts, you will have the new OS.

A FEW TIPS

On your Blackberry Device, go to Options > About. On the third line you will see the current OS. Check this number before and after your upgrade.

Blackberry Operating Systems

Just like I told you how to install the Desktop Manager, you will use the same link, press the drop down arrow, and choose your phone. The next screen will show all of the operating systems for your phone. Download the newest one.
