Tutorial: Rust Text Effect

Rust text may be tricky if you are not aware of a new simple techniques to use. This text can be used for just about any application or any type of website. This would be perfect on a clan website for a video game, or you might want to re-work your logo to this cool text effect.

Step One

The first thing to do is open up photoshop, go to file > new and make a 500 x 500 work area.

Step Two

Next you want to create clouds, make your background color black (#000000) and your foreground color a rusty brown color (#926320).

Once you do that, go to filter > render > clouds.
*tip – make sure you do not have a lot of black where your text will be or else the text will be hard to read.

Step Three

Now the fun part which will make the background more rusty. Do the following:
+ Go to Images->Adjustments->Brightness/Contrast
Brightness=50 and Contrast=-20

+ Go to Filter->Brush Strokes->Sprayed Strokes
Stroke Lenght=3, Spray Radius=20 and Spray Direction=Horizontal

+Go to Filter->Noise->Add Noise
Amount=3, Distribution=Gaussian and check Monocromatic

+ Go to Filter->Brush Strokes
Radius=25, Smoothness=15

+ Go to Filter->Sharpen->Unsharp Mask
Amount=177, Radius=8.7, Treshold=0

+ Go to Filter->Sharpen->Unsharp Mask
Amount=50, Radius=40, Treshold=0

You should have something like this:

Step Four

Now add text. I used the words ARMY and then STRONG under it. To add type, press T.

Go to layer > layer properties > blending options and add the following effects (click to view effects).
+ Drop Shadow
+ Inner Shadow
+ Gradient Overlay
+ Stroke

DROP SHADOW

GRADIENT OVERLAY

Your text effect will now look like this:

Once you complete that, change the layer to color dodge.

You now have this:

You are not done yet, but close!!!

Step Five

Duplicate Layer 1 by clicking it, and dragging it to the Create New Layer icon.

Step Six

Move Layer 1 Copy above the Army text.

Then press Ctrl + Alt + G

To get the STRONG, Create a new layer, Add Text (T). Change drop shadow and stroke to the following:
DROP SHADOW

STROKE
newstroke

You also want to copy Layer 1 and move it above the STRONG layer.

One final step. (PHEW)

Step Seven

Make a new empty layer and move it on top of all layers. Use the Gradient Tool. Select a white (#FFFFFF) foreground, and a black background (#000000). Select the Radial.

In the new layer, click the middle of the layer, and drag out to one of the corners like so:

Your area should look like this:

Change that layer option to multiply:

YOUR DONE!!!

Your image should now look like this:
